SPIRITED AWAY

This collection of woven designs is inspired by the movie “Spirited Away” by Studio Ghibli. It’s a very symbolic movie that tells the story of a child, Chihiro, who enters a world of fantasy, as a way to symbolize emotional growth into adulthood.

INSPIRATION

PROCESS
As a first approach to the collection, I laid out color stripes, looking for a balance in color and proportions, while telling the story told in the movie.
I then started working on the loom, having first defined the yarn color palette.
While weaving the trials, I chose woven structures that referenced key elements and motifs from the movie, like the red bridge, the water, and the main characters. I chose woven structures that showed movement to refer to the water, as well as create a structure that symbolizes the bridge. I also alternated different colored yarns to imply transparency, a very symbolic element in the movie's narrative.
The designs were created and woven in a 4-shaft loom.

The collection is complete with a tapestry that represents the climax of the movie, a scene in which both main characters reach maturity.
Transparency is used in this design in the same way that it is used in the scene and throughout the movie, to symbolize doubt and a lack of self-confidence.
